The
Chinese pipistrelle
(
Hypsugo pulveratus
) is a species of vesper bat in the Vespertilionidae family. It is found in China, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam.
· Brown dorsally, pale or whitish ventrally. Blackish face.
· Forearm length 32.9-35.5mm Yunnan and Sichuan. One male weighed 6.2 g, Yunnan. Forearm 33-36 mm according to Smith & Xie (2008).
· Top inner incisors bicuspid.
· Previously known as
Pipistrellus pulveratus
.
The upperparts are dark brown with a scattering of pale tipped hairs; on the underparts, the pale tips are longer and more abundant, evenly frosting the lower surface. The fur of the body does not extend to the membranes. The ears are rather large, the tragus is short, broad and bluntly rounded. In the skull, the upper incisors' are about equal in length, but the inner one is distinctly bifid, with the secondary cusp on the our side and directed slightly backwards. The second upper premolar is internal to the tooth row but visible between the first and third upper premolars, which is nearly in contact.
Habitat and Ecology:
In Myanmar and Thailand the species is found in limestone outcrops surrounded by semi-evergreen rainforest and disturbed remnants of forests. It roosts in caves, but has also been found roosting in houses. Also found in Myanmar in dry deciduous forest and known from sea level up to 1,080 m asl (Bates
et al
. 2005). In Viet Nam it also inhabits limestone areas.
